Salvador Dali in St. Petersburg

On January 11th, The Dali Museum opened its doors in St. Petersburg ,Florida.  This museum houses the most comprehensive collection of Spanish Surrealist Salvatore Dali's work as compiled by collectors A. Reynolds Morse and Eleanor Morse over a 45 year period.  The collection includes 96 oil paintings, 100 watercolors and drawings, 1,300 graphics, photographs, sculptures and objects d'art.  The collection not only provides visitors an excellent view of Dali's progression as an artist, but periodic rotations of collections allow Dali lovers to enjoy new works each time they visit.  Enjoy some collection highlights below:

A converted warehouse, the new three-story glass and concrete trapezoid structure was designed by the firm Hellmuth, Obata Kassabaum (HOK).  The structure can also withstand a Category Five hurricane.

Daddy Longlegs of the Evening--Hope! (1940)
This was the first Dali piece the Morse's bought at auction.  The Morse's became lifelong friends of Dali and they often traveled together all over the world.

Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man (1943)
This is a piece from Dali's classic period and was completed when Dali was living in the United Sates from 1940 to 1948.

The Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1952-1954)
Here we see Dali famous 1931 piece Persistence of Memory reinterpreted by Dali.  As you can see the landscape is now flooded.

Girl with Curls (1926)
The girl in the foreground is not in proportion with her surroundings, this in turn accentuates the other-worldly quality of the piece.   This painting serves as a precursor of Dali's Surrealist works that would emerge soon.
